The Union Cabinet approved the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS) with a budgetary outlay of ₹10,000 crore up to financial year 2039–40.
The scheme aims to establish a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India. It is intended to reduce dependence on imported shipping containers, strengthen supply-chain resilience and support domestic manufacturing.
Shipping containers are standardised cargo units used to move goods across ships, trains and road vehicles without repeatedly unloading and repacking the cargo. They are therefore an important component of multimodal logistics and international trade.
The scheme supports the establishment of new manufacturing facilities and the expansion of existing units. Its target is to increase India’s annual container manufacturing capacity approximately tenfold, from around 70,000 TEUs to 7.5 lakh TEUs.
TEU stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit, a standard measurement used to describe container capacity.
