The Ministry of Defence signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore on 2 November 2026 with two Indian shipyards for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy.

The contracts were signed with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in New Delhi. Under the agreement, GRSE will construct five corvettes, while GSL will build the remaining three.

The project is significant because the ships will be designed indigenously by the Indian Navy and constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings selected through a competitive process. The vessels will be equipped with advanced missiles, weapons and sensor systems for operations across air, surface and sub-surface domains.

The project is expected to strengthen India’s domestic shipbuilding industry and create employment opportunities across shipyards and associated industries.
