India reached an important development milestone in its indigenous Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system for diesel-electric submarines. The Setting to Work Phase-2 activity for the AIP Energy Module was inaugurated on 24 October 2026 at Larsen & Toubro’s AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat.

The Energy Module was developed by the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL), which functions under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

An AIP system enables a conventional submarine to remain underwater for longer periods without relying as frequently on atmospheric oxygen. This can improve underwater endurance and operational capability.

The next stage involves energising the module for power generation and conducting tests according to Indian Navy protocols. Following these activities, the system is intended to be handed over for integration into a Kalvari-class submarine, with integration planned for early 2027.

Why is it important?

  • Strengthens indigenous defence technology.
  • Supports the Navy’s underwater operational capability.
  • Demonstrates cooperation between DRDO, industry and the Indian Navy.
  • Relates to the broader objective of defence self-reliance.
