SIMBEX-2026 Begins at Visakhapatnam The 33rd edition of the Singapore–India Maritime Bilateral Exercise, known as SIMBEX-2026, commenced at Visakhapatnam on 21 October 2026. The exercise is scheduled to continue until 26 October. The exercise brings together the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy. It began in 1994 under the name Exercise Lion King and has developed into an important platform for professional exchanges and maritime training between the two countries. SIMBEX-2026 is divided into two phases: Harbour phase: 21–23 October 2026, covering professional interactions, planning activities and exchanges between naval personnel. Sea phase: 24–26 October 2026, involving maritime operations and tactical exercises in the Bay of Bengal. The sea phase includes activities related to anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and anti-air warfare. Such exercises help participating navies improve coordination and operational interoperability. Ministry of Defence Signs ₹770 Crore Radar Contract The Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth approximately ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) on 21 October 2026 to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars, designated LLLR-I, for the Indian Army. The radar system is designed to detect and track fighter-sized aerial targets as well as mini and micro drones. Its ability to prioritise aerial targets can strengthen the Army’s response to unmanned aerial system threats. The procurement is also significant for India’s defence-manufacturing sector. Indigenous production and the participation of domestic industries can help reduce reliance on external suppliers and strengthen national defence capabilities. Indian Air Force Engages Industry on Unmanned and Autonomous Systems The Indian Air Force (IAF) held an industry outreach programme at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on 21 October 2026. The programme brought together representatives from drone companies, start-ups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and other industry partners. Around 100 industry representatives attended the programme, which focused on the IAF’s future requirements for unmanned and autonomous systems. The discussions built on the IAF Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Roadmap released during IAF Dronathon 2026 at Pokhran on 14 September 2026. The roadmap envisages a connected range of unmanned systems designed to complement existing and future manned aircraft. Important technology areas include indigenous propulsion, autonomous software, reliable navigation and standardised interfaces. Key points for revision Organisation: Indian Air Force Programme date: 21 October 2026 Venue: Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi Participants: Approximately 100 representatives from industry Focus: Unmanned and autonomous systems Main objective: Develop reliable, indigenous defence technologies Why it matters The initiative illustrates how the armed forces can work with Indian industry and research organisations to develop advanced technologies. It is relevant to questions on defence indigenisation, drones, artificial intelligence and self-reliance. Official source: Press Information Bureau – IAF unmanned systems roadmap 4. India Hosts the Agrivoltaics World Conference 2026 The seventh edition of the Agrivoltaics World Conference 2026 commenced on 21 October at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. India is hosting the conference in the Global South for the first time. The three-day international conference is being hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, with support from Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and in partnership with Conexio-PSE. The conference theme is “Powering the Global South.” Agrivoltaics refers to the combined use of land for agriculture and solar energy generation. Solar panels can be installed above or alongside crops in appropriately designed systems, allowing farming and renewable electricity production to coexist. This approach may help diversify farmers’ income, improve land-use efficiency and support clean-energy expansion. Its success depends on factors such as crop type, panel design, water availability and the needs of local farmers. Important facts for TNPSC Event: Seventh Agrivoltaics World Conference Dates: 21–23 October 2026 Venue: Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi Host ministry: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Theme: Powering the Global South Core concept: Combining agriculture with solar energy generation Exam relevance Connect agrivoltaics with renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, rural development and farmer income. It is also useful for understanding how land can support both food production and clean electricity. Official source: Press Information Bureau – Agrivoltaics World Conference 5.
