Welcome to TNPSCPrepPro Daily Current Affairs – 6 October 2026.
Today’s important developments cover Science & Technology, Polity, Rural Development, International Relations, Tamil Nadu and Awards. The topics below have been selected based on their potential relevance to TNPSC Prelims and Mains.
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.
Their work helped establish optogenetics, a technique that allows scientists to control the activity of individual nerve cells using light.
Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel’s research on light-sensitive proteins called channelrhodopsins provided the foundation for this field. Karl Deisseroth subsequently helped transform this discovery into a powerful method for controlling neural activity with high precision.
Optogenetics combines genetic techniques and light-based control to activate or inhibit specific neurons. It has become an important tool for understanding how the brain influences memory, emotions and behaviour.
The technique is also being investigated for possible applications in neurological and sensory disorders.
Prelims Tip:
Remember the connection:
Light → Channelrhodopsin → Neurons → Optogenetics
The Ministry of Rural Development has notified a new Schedule of Permissible Works under the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), commonly referred to as VB–G RAM G.
The new framework contains 375 permissible works, compared with 266 works under the earlier framework. This represents an expansion of approximately 41%.
The works are organised under four broad areas:
The government said the revised framework is intended to strengthen rural infrastructure while linking employment creation with long-term community assets and climate resilience.
The VB–G RAM G Act, 2025 came into force from 1 July 2026. The framework provides a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment to eligible rural households whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work.
Exam Connection:
TNPSC may ask about the number of days, ministry, thematic areas and purpose of VB–G RAM G.
The Supreme Court of India has sought records from the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding alleged modifications to Form 6, the application used for registration of new voters.
A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant clarified that the Court had not approved any modified version of Form 6 and indicated that it would examine the records to determine who authorised the changes.
The issue is connected with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Form 6 is used by eligible citizens for new voter registration.
The Election Commission’s voter service portal currently provides Form 6 for citizens who are 18 years or above, or who will attain the qualifying age in the relevant electoral process.
Polity Connection:
This topic can be linked with:
Election Commission → Electoral Rolls → Voter Registration → Form 6 → SIR
Polling is being held today, 6 October 2026, in two Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies:
Both constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Polling is scheduled from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Counting of votes is scheduled for 9 October 2026.
The bypolls are significant in the context of Tamil Nadu’s post-Assembly-election political developments and are also important from an electoral administration perspective.
| Constituency | District | Reservation | Polling Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madurantakam | Chengalpattu | SC | 6 October 2026 |
| Dharapuram | Tiruppur | SC | 6 October 2026 |
TNPSC Tip:
For Tamil Nadu current affairs, remember the constituency + district + reservation status combination.
India and Switzerland are expanding bilateral cooperation in several strategic areas.
During Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin’s visit to India, discussions covered defence, nuclear energy, trade, mobility, investment and technology cooperation.
India and Switzerland also advanced cooperation through agreements concerning migration and mobility and a Young Professionals Scheme.
The two countries are also looking at deeper collaboration in areas such as defence production, clean energy, infrastructure and innovation.
For TNPSC Mains, India–Switzerland relations can be studied under:
Diplomatic relations → Trade & investment → Technology → Defence → Nuclear energy → Mobility
