Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 Awarded for Optogenetics The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Their work helped establish optogenetics, a technique that allows scientists to control the activity of individual nerve cells using light. Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel’s research on light-sensitive proteins called channelrhodopsins provided the foundation for this field. Karl Deisseroth subsequently helped transform this discovery into a powerful method for controlling neural activity with high precision. Why is Optogenetics Important? Optogenetics combines genetic techniques and light-based control to activate or inhibit specific neurons. It has become an important tool for understanding how the brain influences memory, emotions and behaviour. The technique is also being investigated for possible applications in neurological and sensory disorders. TNPSC Exam Points Prelims Tip:Remember the connection: Light → Channelrhodopsin → Neurons → Optogenetics 2. VB–G RAM G: Government Notifies 375 Permissible Works The Ministry of Rural Development has notified a new Schedule of Permissible Works under the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), commonly referred to as VB–G RAM G. The new framework contains 375 permissible works, compared with 266 works under the earlier framework. This represents an expansion of approximately 41%. The works are organised under four broad areas: The government said the revised framework is intended to strengthen rural infrastructure while linking employment creation with long-term community assets and climate resilience. TNPSC Exam Points Important Background The VB–G RAM G Act, 2025 came into force from 1 July 2026. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant clarified that the Court had not approved any modified version of Form 6 and indicated that it would examine the records to determine who authorised the changes. The issue is connected with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. What is Form 6? Form 6 is used by eligible citizens for new voter registration. The Election Commission’s voter service portal currently provides Form 6 for citizens who are 18 years or above, or who will attain the qualifying age in the relevant electoral process.
